Supermodule furnace was a first for client CPChem

Work carried out by Technip Energies for Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) has been judged the “Best of the Best” by the American magazine, Engineering News-Record (ENR).

The news was announced at the 60th annual Award of Excellence celebration held in New York City on March 27, 2025.

Technip Energies was Lead Design firm on the Supermodule Furnace project at Baytown, Texas, which was named Best Project in the Energy/Industrial category for the Texas/Louisiana region. Revealing the award, ENR said the project represented a “notable achievement in modular construction”.

This latest recognition for Technip Energies was welcomed by Rob Scott, Managing Director Americas. He said: “We are incredibly honored that the Baytown project is recognized as ‘the Best of the Best’. This accolade is a testament to the unwavering dedication and exceptional teamwork of our people. It also reflects the invaluable trust Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem) has placed in us as a client. Their commitment to advancing technology and innovation, coupled with our collaborative spirit, has been instrumental in achieving this extraordinary milestone. Together with CP Chem and our industry partners, we have set a new benchmark for excellence and innovation in the industry.”

Largest

The massive, 2,990-ton Supermodule Furnace was part of a debottlenecking project to increase ethylene production at the Baytown plant without building an entirely new facility.

At the time of its construction, it was the largest furnace Technip Energies had helped build. Similarly, this modularization project was the first of its kind undertaken by CPChem.

This project started in 2019. Building on its success, Technip Energies’ Houston operating center has since designed and supplied similar furnaces in the U.S. and Qatar.
