FAQ

CCUS encompasses a range of technologies designed to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from major sources like power plants, refineries, cement, steel and other industrial facilities. Additionally, these technologies can remove existing CO2 from the atmosphere.

A CCUS application consists of three steps: capture, transport and storage of CO2.

The main methods for capturing CO2 are: post-combustion; pre-combustion; and oxy-fuel combustion.

  • Post-combustion technology separates CO2 from the flue gas after the fuel is burnt.
  • Pre-combustion methods involve converting the fuel into a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen and CO2 before it is burnt. Once the CO2 is separated, the remaining hydrogen-rich mixture can be used as fuel.
  • Finally, oxy-fuel technology involves burning a fuel with almost pure oxygen to produce CO2 and steam, with the released CO2 subsequently captured.

CCUS is a critical solution for delivering net zero emissions and accelerate energy transition. It allows reducing emissions in industries that are the most difficult to decarbonize, such as steel, cement production, refining, and petrochemical processing. It can enable a source of flexible, low-carbon power generation which will make an important contribution to a resilient net zero electricity mix.

CCUS is also a route for producing low-carbon hydrogen, which can be used to decarbonize industrial processes, as well as domestic and industrial heating, power and transport.

The process involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions at their source, treating and purifying the captured CO2, and then either recycling it or storing it permanently in geological formations. Large-scale CCUS projects are being executed worldwide, primarily in Europe and the United States.

Higher CO2 capture rates will be essential for CCUS to play its role in the transition to a net zero energy system.

CCUS-equipped power and industrial plants operating today are designed to capture around 90% of the CO2 from flue gas.
